Nature and Our Cities Curriculum Overvie

The 2019-20 Global Scholars syllabus, Nature and Our Cities, allowed for students to learn about the growing need for environmental sustainability as cities continue to grow larger and larger. Students were tasked with understanding how public health, infrastructure, transportation and the citizens themselves interact with the environment in both positive and negative ways, and were challenged with spreading awareness of these issues and creating ideas for management. Students met for Global Scholars three-times per week, learning about new concepts and vocabulary, discussing Madrid's status as a heavily populated and heavily polluted city, and using technology to communicate with peers across the globe. The COVID-19 pandemic unfortunately caused students to complete their final coursework online, though we were able to use the opportunity to view how the environment reacts to a major decrease in pollution as residents are asked to remain inside, thus furthering thoughts about the best methods of caring for the environment and ensuring we are able to live a healthy life.
